Call for “Yaktion” to IOC – Save the Olympics
It is time to take action. We have discussed some Olympic Class Yak events on our blog and across the social-sphere. The potential is clear and could definitely improve the ratings for NBC. Add a yak to Ice Dancing and I think you would have something that Apolo Ohno could bring to prime time. Lets [...]
Yakkin’ Like You Mean It.
In this area I think we could model our behavior on the yak’s. Contrary to popular myth, yaks have very little to say. When they do, they mean it. But yaks are fully and completely, tragically hip.
What Does Yak Meat Taste Like?
“That Depends!”
Yak is a bovine, so from a technical standpoint the meat is called “Beef”. As with any meat, flavor is dependent on a number of factors. Breed, genetics within a breed, diet, age, environmental conditions, and the process used to “finish” the animal all play an important role in the end result. Yak meat is [...]
Blizzard of Yaks
Yaks never cease to amaze me. The wind was wicked. The snow stinging. The yaks all acted like it was any other day, except to shake off the snow every now and then.
Yak Cheese Helping Tibetan Nomads
Western China’s most abundant resource, the humble yak, are now helping Tibetan nomads.
Farmed in the region for centuries, the yak has been a traditional source of sustenance.

Interview – Milking a Yak
An interesting video demonstrating the milking of a yak. Seems a bit of a roadside attraction but yurt is cool!
Ode to Matthew the Yak and Escapism…
Folks, this is a great song inspired by a young bull yak we sold to some folks in Florissant CO. He was a bit rambunctious and escaped to the Fossil Beds National Park were we could not drive in and get him. We were able to walk up and feed him a number of times but we could not catch him. Finally his new owner was able to bring him in and Matthew is now happy at this new home. One thing we have learned is that yaks have to know they are home or they will try to go back where they came from, making friends all along the way!
From our Friends at Bijou Basin Ranch
Eileen and Carl Koop can’t knit a stitch, but these ex-New Yorkers – he’s a former software engineer, and she’s a chemist — know from yarn. Their Bijou Spun skeins are spun from pure yak down, or yak down mixed with wool, bamboo, nylon or alpaca. Each spring, they painstakingly comb their 15 yaks on Bijou Basin ranch in Elbert County, and send the collected fiber off to be washed, processed and spun. We talked yak recently with Carl.
“Rest of Everest” podcast “Yak-Tastic”
This is a terrific video from “The Rest of Everest” Podcast. It is fairly long but it rolls some beautiful Yak Footage!
